Also in July, WGXA reported that the historic town of Milledgeville had been plagued by a traffic ticket fraud issue. The local police and municipality had devised a system in which drivers could easily pay their fines by visiting a website printed on the back of their tickets. However, motorists and reporters quickly discovered that the municipality had not bothered to actually purchase and register the web domain.
Instead, they hosted the payment website on a domain that could be purchased by anyone. Someone did just that, likely to prove a point. This individual then renamed the website “NOT the real municipal court” and included a short paragraph attacking the police department and municipal government for a massive cybersecurity failure. This unknown actor also urged motorists to complain to the Mayor about this “oversight.”
