Georgia Drivers Confused About How Speeding Tickets Will Be Handled

Many Georgia motorists are confused about how their speeding tickets will be handled. This is after seemingly conflicting information about grace periods, dismissals, and the resumption of speeding tickets in school zones. So what exactly is going on here? Will your tickets be dismissed? How do you know if you actually need to pay your speeding ticket? Can you dispute your ticket? These are some of the questions that Georgia drivers are asking themselves.

Speeding Cameras Begin Issuing Tickets Again in Macon-Bibb County

At the end of November 2022, it was reported that Macon-Bibb County was once again resuming its policy of back ticketing using speeding cameras in school zones. This was after some drivers had the opportunity to have thousands of dollars worth of speeding tickets dismissed, thanks to a grace period. Despite this grace period, many drivers expressed confusion at the resumption of ticketing, stating that there is a clear communication problem in the county. Although the authorities made an announcement over social media, many drivers said that they would have preferred notification delivered in the mail.

Temporary Grace Periods Explained

As it stands, a single speeding ticket can result in a $100 fine for a first offense – providing you traveled through a school zone at over 10 miles per hour above the speed limit. Second and subsequent offenses will be charged at a rate of $150. On November 9, Macon-Bibb County announced that they were making temporary changes, giving drivers a grace period that would limit the maximum number of speeding tickets over the grace period to one. In other words, drivers could have all subsequent speeding tickets after their first offense refunded.

Tickets Can Be Dropped Due to Legal Issues

But these temporary grace periods are not your only option if you’d like to have your ticket dropped. In June of 2022, Glynn County dropped almost 300 speeding tickets due to issues with its radar technology. This came after an announcement that inadequate testing had thrown doubt on the accuracy of these radar readings. There may be many other ways to dispute the accuracy or legitimacy of your ticket, so make sure to speak with an attorney for more information.

Some People Get Thousands of Dollars Worth of Tickets

Back in October of 2022, one family reported that they had amassed more than $5,000 worth of speeding tickets due to cameras installed in school zones. This was mostly because the family members noticed the tickets but assumed they were inactive due to recent legislation against speeding tickets in Georgia.

I realized the true function of a lawyer was to unite parties riven asunder. The lesson was so indelibly burnt into me that a large part of my time during the twenty years of my practice as a lawyer was occupied in bringing about private compromises of hundreds of cases. I lost nothing thereby — not even money, certainly not my soul.
